Why does the water from my water heater smell of rotten eggs

A rotten egg smell coming from your water heater is often an indication of a common issue known as hydrogen sulfide gas. This gas is produced by bacteria in the water when they react with anode rods or other sources of sulfur.

To prevent or minimize this smell, you can take the following steps:

Flushing the tank: Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank can contribute to bacterial growth. Regularly flushing your water heater can help remove sediment and reduce the chances of bacteria thriving.

Increasing water temperature: Bacteria growth is more likely to occur in warm water. By increasing the temperature setting on your water heater to 60℃ or higher, you can discourage bacterial growth.

Replacing the anode rod: Anode rods are sacrificial components that help prevent the tank from corroding. However, they can react with sulfur in the water and produce the rotten egg smell. Consider replacing your existing anode rod with one made of aluminum or zinc to reduce the odor.

If you're already experiencing the smell, here's a solution you can try:

Flush the tank: Turn off the water heater and let it cool down. Close the water supply valve to the heater and attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Open the drain valve and allow the water to flush out for several minutes. This process helps remove the bacteria and sediment that contribute to the smell.
Disinfect the tank: After flushing, mix a solution of hydrogen peroxide (3%) with water in a ratio of 1:10 and pour it into the tank. Fill the tank completely and let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Then, drain the tank completely.

Flush and refill: Once the tank is drained, flush it again by running water through it for a few minutes to remove any remaining disinfectant or debris. Finally, close the drain valve, open the water supply valve, and let the tank refill.
